Canterbury Operatic Society has around 70 members, but we are always happy to have new recruits! Most of our members perform with us (though not necessarily in everything we do), and some are involved in other ways, doing those essential jobs backstage and front of house that keep a show going. The annual membership fee is £25 (with a lower rate for junior members, under the age of 18) and membership for performing members is by audition. We hold auditions at the start of our summer concert season after Easter and also during September/October as we begin preparing for our main show. For more information on membership, please contact us via our website. canterburyoperatics@hotmail.co.uk
The Canterbury Players are based in - Canterbury - and perform at the Gulbenkian Theatre (University of Kent, Canterbury), The Farmhouse, Canterbury, Whitstable Playhouse and the Horsebridge in Whitstable and at the annual Lounge On The Farm, amongst other venues. Established in 2003 after a union of two previously well known local drama groups: Canterbury Dramatics Society (formed in 1923) Playcraft (formed in 1951) the Players have gone from strength to strength. Millers Night On the last Thursday of each month, we have our social evening. It's a friendly, informal occasion and an ideal opportunity to make yourself known to Canterbury Players - and vice versa. Please feel free to come along to the Millers Arms, Mill Lane, Canterbury, at around 8.30pm to say hello.
Canterbury has long been associated with one of England’s finest literary talents. We rightly celebrate the fact that the characters from Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales finish their pilgrimage here in the city. But we believe that there is room to celebrate another of England's literary sons here in the city. Writing some two hundred years after Chaucer, William Shakespeare produced work which expresses the human condition in the most profound way. His plays still speak to us four hundred years after his death. This leaves us with the challenge of where to stage our plays. Looking around the city, we are constantly reminded of Canterbury’s literary and ecclesiastical connections, but there is also a great deal of natural beauty here. Ours is a city full of green spaces as well as history. Taking these factors together, it seems right to honour both the bard and the beauty of our city, by staging some of his works outside in the open air. This vision is the driving force behind the Canterbury Shakespeare Festival, which will stage its inaugural performances in August of this year.
Come and join us as we celebrate Shakespeare in the open spaces of our city this summer. Contact: info@canterburyshakespeare.co.uk

Our society continues to bring the very best amateur productions to the area and we intend to keep coming and presenting both well-established and new productions for you. Aside from our two main shows a year at the Orchard Theatre in Dartford, we have our own premises at Heathfields Hall in Dartford where we rehearse and where we, and other groups within the society, can stage smaller shows. We have a thriving Youth Group full of extremely talented youngsters and we also have a hard working group of members in the form of the Good Companions; and countless members and patron members who partake in hall productions. These groups and members work tirelessly to provide invaluable support and much needed funds to the society. Their enthusiasm and friendship is a lesson to us all and if you ever have the opportunity to see any of their performances you will not be disappointed. Contact: daodscom@gmail.com
