The COMPANY of PLAYERS was formed in 1962. We have been based at The Little Theatre in Balfour Street, Hertford since 1969, where we now perform five productions a season. Each production runs for eight performances, and although the Theatre seats just 63 people we average around 90% ticket sales. The Company also regularly performs at Hertford Theatre Week, where we have won many awards over the last 35 years, most recently as Winners in 2011 and Runners-up in both 2010 and 2009. You do not need to be a member to audition, but if cast, then you would need to join the group (only £15 a year). The Company of Players is a private theatre club, which is why we do not advertise our productions and why tickets can only be obtained through members. For details of membership you can contact:- The Little Theatre, 6 Christchurch Place, Balfour Street, HERTFORD SG14 3BB You can info@cops.org.uk See our website for more info on the company

A great number of ideas are born over a few drinks in the pub and Variety Express's birth was no exception! In 1980 a few people, several of whom had previously been involved in amateur theatre productions, suggested forming a new entertainment group. They thought a combination of singing and dancing with a little comedy thrown in would be a good recipe. This group could perform locally and hopefully be able to raise some much needed money for local charities. The proceeds of that first show, some £200, were tripled the following year and have increased substantially ever since. In fact, since its conception back in 1980, Variety Express has donated over £90,000 to charities including nursing homes, Lister Hospital and dozens of specialist care organisations Variety Express is still going strong and involves a team of well over 30 members with each person providing an essential role, from back stage 'hands on deck' to sound and lighting technicians, and of course there's the cast! Variety Express has come a long way in its thirty year history and our aim is to provide a fabulous evening's entertainment, at a very reasonable price, and most importantly to provide our chosen charities with the biggest donation we can! Water Lane produce three plays per year which include a children\’s play performed at Rhodes Centre in Jan/Feb with a large cast of adults and children, and the opportunity to produce creative sets, an outdoor production in June/July which has in recent years been performed in the Monastery Gardens on Windhill and is usually a Shakespeare comedy and then in Oct/Nov we return to Rhodes for an autumn play. We work hard at our productions because we always believe in putting on the best show we can, but this doesn’t stop us having a great time in the process. The group is made up of long-standing, new and returning members who may take the lead role in one production and be back stage for the next or taking a minor role. We are a relaxed and friendly group and we hope welcoming. We pride ourselves on being a bunch of like minded people who are prepared to muck in on stage, back stage and at our various social events; no luvvidom here! We always need more people to tread the boards, but if getting in front of an audience isn’t your thing then why not help out backstage with set, costumes, make-up, sound, lighting, prompt...the list is endless. If you would like to act and help backstage that’s fine too as we find that many of our members like to ring the changes in the level of their participation. Auditions are quite relaxed affairs too so why not choose a production from our forthcoming show list and come along we will be very happy to welcome you. The Whitwell Players is a group of like-minded people, who come together to have – and to provide – fun, while raising money for good causes at the same time. Typically we put on three events a year: the Christmas panto, an evening of one-act plays, and a spring/summer production. Most of these are cast by open-call audition, and we welcome anyone and everyone into the fold, frequently writing in extra parts to cater for all. Rehearsals are full of laughter and a great way to learn new skills, grow your confidence, and form lasting friendships. There are myriad roles for those who mightn’t want to appear on stage, as well. We would love to hear from you if you’re interested in becoming involved in any way. Please check our website for updates and follow us on Facebook and Instagram! Contact info@whitwellplayers.com or via our website or social media
