wmpas Theatre is a mainly amateur group, although includes some actors and technical experts who have considerable professional experience. "Cwmpas" is the title of the theatre as in 'O Gwmpas' - in Welsh 'around or surroundings' - in the sense that the members of the group reside in many areas of South Wales. This was the idea George Askey had in mind when, in 1985, he decided to establish the Company. ince 1986 the Company has worked in Cearphilly Castle, St. Fagans for one year and finally in 1995 accepted an invitation from Newport Borough Council to operate from Tredegar House and Gardens in Newport. The initial aim was to perform Shakespeare in the open-air, and the wide variety of natural settings in Tredegar Park present wide challenges and productions have proved highly successful playing to large audiences. Audiences are seated in covered stands and can enjoy an evening picnic in the beautiful park (weather permitting!). Bar facilities are also provided. Winter activities by the company include a great deal of work for charities in many localities including Rhondda Heritage Park, Tredegar House, Insole Court, Howells School and Llandaf Memorial Centre. The NSPCC, Soroptimists, BHF (British Heart Foundation) and other bodies have benefited as well as many community groups. The company rehearse in the Vanguard Centre, based in Van Road RC Church in Caerphilly, and have performed there. They also have recently accepted an offer to perform The Vigil, a play of the Resurrection by Ladislas Fodor, next Easter in Llandaff Cathedral. All new members are welcome by contacting Jackie or Matt, both on stage and behind-the-scenes. Contact via our website or social media
We exist to have fun with Amateur Theatre in our community. We don't take our selves too seriously but we put a lot of effort into what we do and are proud of it. I personally get a lot of fun out of the rehearsals phase. If you want to join us just let me know. Contact via our website or social media
