Hawick Amateur Operatic Society was founded in 1910. The founder members included Willie and John Campbell, W. P. Gaylor, Adam Leithhead and Helen Charters who was the mother of the recently retired producer Jean Wintrope. The first production 'H.M.S. Pinafore' was staged in the ‘New Theatre’ in Croft Road in the spring of 1911. Nowadays the company still thrives and is open to anyone with an interest in Drama, Musical Theatre and Dance. Melrose, Roxburghshire  
Melrose Amateur Operatic Society (MAOS) was formed in 1935 by Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiasts and is the only society regularly performing Gilbert and Sullivan operas in the Scottish Borders. There are currently 32 singing members, 19 non-performing members and four life members. The Society is managed by a committee elected by members at the Annual General Meeting in June, when the show for two years hence is chosen by popular vote of members. (ie 2013 show chosen in 2011). SELKIRK AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY Or 'The Opera' as the Society is more commonly known. Selkirk Opera has been entertaining the folk of Selkirk and the Borders with light opera and musicals for more than 80 years. The Company meets to rehearse on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in the Selkirk High School Music Department (the big building in front of the High School) at 7.00pm during the winter months.
