Sligo Drama Circle

www.sligodramacircle.ie

The Market Yard, Sligo

Sligo Drama Circle is an amateur drama group formed in 1956 to provide live theatre to the Sligo public. With the disappearance of the professional theatre companies from the Irish scene at the time, and the reluctance of the National Theatre to undertake provincial tours, the amateur movement across the country began to fill this cultural and social void. There were many local amateur drama companies on the scene at the time and it was from one of these companies, Sligo Unknown Players, that Sligo Drama Circle evolved. The Drama Circle was founded in the Autumn of 1956 and had their first production in the Spring of 1957, presenting Gerard Healy’s “Thy Dear Father”, for which they achieved a very creditable second place in the All-Ireland. After fifty years of hectic activity, with the Drama Circle producing as many as four or five plays in some summer seasons, the company is still thriving. Having been instrumental in mooting the idea of the building of the Hawk’s Well Theatre, the Circle is now involved in Young People’s Theatre, the Sligo Talking Newspaper and we also have our own rehearsal space where other smaller productions are presented in a less threatening atmosphere. This website provides more detailed information on all of our current activities as well as looking back at our long and successful past.

The Cecilian Musical Society

Limerick

Limerick's Longest Running Musical Society
The Cecilian Musical Society, then known as the Crescent Operatic Society, was founded in 1919. About five years later the name was changed to the Cecilian Operatic Society, the name having been suggested by Mr, M.J. Flood, then District Justice of Limerick.
From 1928 the society lapsed for a number of years until 1944, when it was revived as the Cecilian Musical Society, concentrating chiefly on choral and orchestral concerts. With the completion of the new Assembly Hall at the Crescent in 1947, the society once again revived stage shows, and in December of that year opened its productions with a pantomime. The society went on to present 130 shows on the Crescent stage. In 2002 The Cecilians produced their first show at the University Concert Hall, “Guys and Dolls”.
Since then, “Sweet Charity”, “Oklahoma”, “My Fair Lady”, “Oliver”, “Crazy for You”, “Singin’ in the Rain”, “42nd Street” & “The Wiz” have been performed to universal acclaim.

Having Celebrated it’s Centenary Year 2011, Wexford Light Opera Society is one of the oldest musical societies in the country.
Beginning as the Wexford Amateur Operatic Society, W.L.O.S. can look back on a varied, and colourful legacy of musical involvement in Wexford town. Through those ten decades the Society has seen many changes, including three changes of name, and embraced many different facets of musical theatre – from the steadfast Gilbert and Sullivan pieces that were the societal back-bone through many decades, to the fast paced, electronically scored modern day musicals.
