Hemel Hempstead Theatre Company

Hemel Hempstead

Our Company (formerly the Hemel Hempstead Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society) has been putting on performances since 1925. We have owned our own theatre, the Boxmoor Playhouse, since 1997. We regularly put on two musicals and two dramatic productions every year; in addition we have a Youth Group which produces a show every year, and we occasionally squeeze an extra production into the schedule. In addition the Company holds plenty of social events, and members enjoy our regular Thursday Club Night, during which our bar is open and everyone can get together for a chat whether they are involved in rehearsals or not. Our members do not only act and/or sing, but we get involved with costume, props, prompt, make-up, directing, lighting, sound, poster and programme design also preparation, backstage management and scenery painting. We sit on committees to decide on our productions and run social events, organise publicity, manage the theatre itself and do the finance, maintenance and cleaning - in fact all the 1001 activities that go with running a company like washing up, manning (and womanning) the bar and cleaning the loos! If you would like to join us in any capacity, don\’t hesitate, we are nice, friendly people and would welcome your company. We have a Youth Section (11 - 18 years) but it is full. We keep a waiting list. Annual subscription rates are modest, and there are special reduced rates for non-acting associates. Interested? email

Hoddesdon Players

Hoddesdon

The Society was founded in 1898 and we believe we are the oldest dramatic society in Hertfordshire.
The Players perform two plays a year at the Broxbourne Civic Hall in High Street, Hoddesdon usually in April and November. In November we are presenting 'The Importance of being Earnest' by Oscar Wilde. In addition there is usually a revue of sketches and songs performed to lighten the dark months of January and February! - Next Revue - February 2011.
We have a full and varied programme of playreadings and social events throughout the year and our Annual General Meeting is held in July.
We usually rehearse at St. Catherine's School, Hoddesdon on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, where there are excellent facilities.
We are members of the Broxbourne Arts Forum and the Badger Group for the Performing Arts, which is a group of three local performing arts societies: Hoddesdon Players, East Herts Operatic Society and Cheshunt Dramatic Society.
Our scenery, properties, furnitiure and costumes are currently housed in Unit 12 at Brookfield Farm Industrial Estate, where we also have a workshop.
We are a small society and we concentrate on presenting plays to the public which are entertaining and which also provide challenges to our members.
We are always looking for new members who will receive a warm welcome and we are looking for people who have an interest in any aspect of drama; not just acting but scene building, costumes, behind-the-scenes work or making the tea! If you would like to join us then please e-mail us at email or write to the Secretary: Mike Marsh at 18 Westhill Road, Hoddesdon, Herts, EN11 9DB (01992 465665).

Kings Langley

Drama , Comedy, Period, Contemporary, Pantomime, Music Hall . If it’s THEATRE we perform it!
In 1925 the first Kings Langley Players trod the boards (in two one-act plays) and have continued presenting theatre year-on-year ever since. We now mount an annual tally of four full-length shows, promoting the best of theatre past and present: three ‘straight’ plays, and one family show, just after Christmas (usually a full-scale pantomime). From time to time there’s an added nostalgia-fest: Music Hall. Now and then the Players stroll further afield - from 1990 until 2005 we presented four large-scale productions at Northern Ireland’s prestigious Ardhowen Theatre in support of HertsAid for Enniskillen, our youth theatre project.

LETCHWORTH ARCADIANS

Letchworth

Formed in 1952, the Society has recently celebrated its golden jubilee.
With over 200 members and patrons, the Arcadians present two major productions per year at the well-appointed Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage, and one junior production at the Plinston Hall, Letchworth.
Gordon Craig Box Office on 01438 363 200
So - you can sing, you\’ve always fancied being on stage, maybe do a little bit of acting or dancing and are aged 16 or over, then maybe you\’re just the sort of person we’re looking for to join our friendly society.
We rehearse at the Norton Methodist Community Centre, Letchworth Garden City on Tuesday evenings mainly, but as a show approaches the cast may also be required to attend on Thursday evenings. There is usually one Sunday rehearsal as well.
Auditioning is quite simple - and not too painful. Auditionees are asked to prepare a vocal audition, in addition they will be asked to sing a few scales and read a short piece of dialogue. In addition there is a short movement audition. The audition panel consists of the musical director and a few committee members. Auditions usually take place in May/June and November/December.
If you are successful then there will be a membership fee to pay which covers most things, but you will be asked to provide some items of costume (shoes, hosiery, gloves etc.) and the occasional small prop and I’m afraid tea and biscuits at rehearsals also incurs a small outlay!
If this sounds like something you\’d like to try then contact our membership secretary Margaret Dinmore by email
Young Arcadians are aged from 10 - 18 years and we meet on Saturday mornings from 10.00 - 12.30 from September to February. After Christmas until the performance in February half term we also meet for rehearsals on a Wednesday evening from 6.30 p.m. - 9.00 p.m.
Auditions are held once a year in May or June.
For further information please email Gilly Nott, with details about yourself such as if you have been in any other societies, school drama productions etc. We will keep your name on file and contact you as soon as we have an audition date.

Joining Harpenden Music Makers
Tenors Wanted!
We sing a wide range of music, from major works through modern/light music to Christmas Carols. While the choir is flourishing under the enthusiastic direction of Christopher Hann, like many choirs, we would love to have more Tenors join us.
We rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 8.00 – 10.00pm at Harpenden High Street Methodist Church. Ability to sight read is not necessary though familiarity with musical notation is important. Enthusiasm and ability to sing with others are essential!
If you are interested in joining us, or just listening to a rehearsal, please feel welcome to drop by. For further information, contact Brian Woods on 01582 761528.
