Rochford District Players

Rochford

It all started with two ward sisters at Rochford Hospital back in 1978, who wanted to raise money for their wards by staging a one-off pantomime. 'Goody Two Shoes,' was chosen and performed in the Rochford Nurses Home Theatre in early 1979. Most of the cast were Hospital staff who enjoyed themselves so much that a second pantomime was staged.
At this point we needed a name and 'The Hospital District Players,' was adopted for what was to become an annual show until 1994 when 'Ali Baba' was the last show staged at the theatre before the demolition of the Hospital.
We now had to find a new home and the Greensward College in Hockley was chosen to hold our 1995 production of 'King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.' Most of our shows have since been at Greensward. Following this change of venue, we also took the opportunity to change our name and become the 'Rochford District Players.'
In the past few years, the group has gone from strength to strength, and two years ago, for only the second time we have performed a summer show, by putting on a farce called 'Local News,' which was written by Sean Dooley and directed by Darren Kent.
We have always had a strong charity ethic and over the years we have raised many thousands of pounds to help local charities.
The Rochford District players are proud members of the National Operatic & Dramatic Association (NODA) which was founded in 1899 'to protect and advance the interest of operatic and dramatic art, and of societies engaged there in.' Today, NODA has over 2500 individual enthusiasts and 2300 amateur companies throughout the UK, performing in venues ranging from the country's leading professional theatres to village halls.
The group are always looking for new recruits to assist backstage, and, or indeed perform on stage in a principal or chorus role. If you are interested, please click here to contact us.

This is a well-established group that was started in the "Mists of time" by a teacher in St Martin's School, Brentwood, Essex.
We usually produce two shows per year, one on a large scale (such as the Queens Theatre, Hornchurch), and another smaller show usually supporting our local theatre at Brentwood.
We are often asked to entertain at various functions and dinners, and although this is time-consuming, some of the members are occasionally able to oblige (this rarely involves the whole membership).

Membership is open to anybody aged sixteen or over, who lives in South Woodham Ferrers or the surrounding district. Southend Shakespeare Company

Southend-on-Sea

Membership enquiries
In 1951, the year of the Festival of Britain, the Southend Shakespeare Company was formed for the study and performance of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Over the years this programme has been extended to include more of the classics.
Nowadays the SSC is one of the few theatre groups in the south-east, professional or amateur, that dedicates itself to performing plays from a classical repertoire.
In recent years our productions have included works both comic and tragic, ancient and modern, by authors as diverse as Chekhov, Sheridan, Wilde, Calderon, Ibsen, Stoppard, Euripides and Arthur Miller.
Our Summer open air tours have seen us performing at various venues in Essex, and Stratford-Upon-Avon. We are also one of the most prolific drama groups around, normally producing at least four productions each year. Consequently we are always on the look out for new faces!
We always welcome new members who may be interested in acting, working backstage or any other aspect of the Company. Associate membership is also available, bringing you full details of all our productions, a regular Newsletter, and complimentary tickets to certain shows.

Chelmsford

We were formed back in 1982, and have gone from performing shows in local halls to performing two shows a year on the Civic and Cramphorn Theatre stages in Chelmsford, Essex. Those of you who have supported us over the years will know that we consistently strive to stage professional quality productions. We differ from some other groups in that not only do we perform timeless favourites, but also challenge ourselves and entertain our audiences with excellent less well-known musicals. In recent years, this diversity has attracted many new members of all ages and backgrounds, and we hope our forthcoming programme of shows will continue to have the same effect.
If you think you may be interested in becoming involved, either onstage or behind the scenes (where the jobs are numerous, interesting and varied), then please contact our Membership Secretary whose details can be found on the website. You will find that we are a very friendly society, and you can always be assured of a warm welcome.
Please take your time to peruse our website, and we will be happy to answer any questions or inquiries you may have. Even if you don't get the urge to join us, we look forward to your continued support as a member of our audience for future shows.

Stock

The WI before the Second World War originally founded the Group but it became known as Stock Drama Group with its own identity shortly after the War. Since then it has gained a reputation as one of the leading Groups in the area and indeed recently merged with another Drama Company from Billericay thereby extending its membership and following and securing its success for the future.
Stock Drama Group puts on two productions a year in the Village Hall, one in May the other in November. The group consists of about 40 active members; ages range from early twenties to retirement. We provide a number of social activities throughout the year as well as involving ourselves in Festival competitions.
With so many amateur companies disappearing in this day and age it is indeed refreshing to come across a Drama Group with so much to look forward to in the coming years.
Stock Drama Group is always looking for new members if you would like to join us (either on stage or helping behind the scenes) please contact us via e-mail at mail@stockdramagroup.com or telephone 01277 840737
