BOADS

Brixham, DevonBOADS was originally a small group of friends under the guise of \‘The Orange Bubbles\’ but wanted to expand their horizons and so changed their name to attract a wider membership and audience. Their first production was of \‘Pearl the Fishermaiden\’ and Ralph Bartlett was one of the original founding members of the group. The group quickly established itself as an essential part of the community and brought lots of pleasure to Brixham and its inhabitants. The first decade comprised mainly of Gilbert and Sullivan productions but they then branched out to lesser-known works to broaden the horizons of the players and audience members.
The group was well known for their lavish scenery that was designed by Jeffrey Snelson (see the Past Shows section for photos of some of his work). There was one occurrence during the 1951 production of \‘Chu Chin Chow\’ when two gentlemen in the audience actually wagered a bet in regards to being able to walk up the pathway on the backdrop or not. Jeffrey was a professional ex-member of the \‘D\’oyly Carte Opera Company\’ and instilled his professionalism into BOADS. Jeffrey stayed with the society until 1963, \‘The Pyjama Game\’ being his final production.
The Society was the first in the South West to produce a number of shows including Oklahoma (1955), Carousel (1958), South Pacific (1961) and Paint Your Wagon (1972).
Over the years we have had a number of outstanding Musical Directors such as George Dolton, Douglas Hutchings, Dennis Iles, Gerry Vaughan Williams, David Warwick and not forgetting our current man Carl Smith.

The Exeter Little Theatre Company was formed in 1954 and was based in Colleton Crescent until 1998 when we moved to our current club house in the Exeter West Quarter. Our club house is easily accessible on foot, by car and on public transport.
We meet on a Wednesday evening for social evenings, play readings, rehearsals and all things theatre. We perform the majority of our plays at the Exeter Barnfield Theatre and we have facilities at our club house allowing us to rehearse, build sets, and meet each week. This includes a wardrobe department, workshop, coffee bar and two rehearsal rooms one of which is large enough to lay out the full size Barnfield stage.
Our youth section is run by a professional drama tutor, her main employer is Exeter City Council and this gives her access to a vast amount of information not to mention her contacts, which can bring great diversity to her timetable. This gives the youth members a varied and far more complete insight into not just drama but theatre as a whole. Their 2008 production was a devised production and included video, animation, choreographed fight scenes and puppetry to compliment the three narrated short stories, which made up the show.
Our membership has a varied skillbase and this allows us to put on shows as diverse as 'Singin' In The Rain' to 'Toad of Toad Hall' and from Pantomimes to Agatha Christie thrillers. We do however need new members continually and would be pleased to hear from anyone who is interested in theatre and drama. A vast knowledge is far from essential but the desire to work as part of team is paramount. Some of the preparation is done by members on their own but during show week the team spirit is generally high.
Exeter Musical Society

ExeterEAOS (Exeter Amateur Operatic Society) was formed in 1904 and is Exeter\’s oldest amateur Society. Our first production, \’The Pirates of Penzance\’ was staged in 1905 at the Royal Public Rooms in London Inn Square and was such a success it was decided to stage another show in December that year but this time at a much grander venue, Exeter\’s much loved Theatre Royal which could seat 900 patrons. Shows continued here for one week every year until 1916 resuming again in 1920 and continued until the outbreak of the second world war in 1939.The first production after the war was \‘Merrie England\’ in 1946.Productions continued every year at The Theatre Royal until 1962 when sadly it was demolished.
For two years the Society presented shows at St. Georges Hall in Market Street until a new home was found at the Savoy Cinema just across the road from the old Theatre Royal and in 1965 opened with \‘Oklahoma!\’ one of the most popular post war shows and playing to an audience of 1900 per night.
In 1969 the Society presented \’The Gondoliers\’ as a second show at the recently opened Northcott Theatre. The Society then returned to the ABC as it was then called for a further three years until it was also demolished.
\’Pink Champagne\’ was the choice for the Society\’s opening at the Northcott Theatre in 1973 and it is here we have presented shows every year since. We also use the Barnfield Theatre to stage a concert or second show usually in November.
At this years Annual General Meeting (AGM) the idea was proposed for a name change. The majority of members voted in favour of this and from July 2009 we shall be called 'Exeter Musical Society' or E.M.S. for short. We are hoping to hold some events to relaunch ourselves, so watch this space!
We have a proud history and tradition in Exeter and are the only amateur society in Exeter to stage musicals with a full orchestra at a professional theatre the next one being \‘Anything Goes\’ 2010. We employ an outside Director, Choreographer and Musical Director and aim to present shows to the highest standard.
Of course we always need new members to keep the Society alive and thriving, whether acting, singing, dancing, backstage or just to support, if you feel like \’ having a go\’ then feel free to contact us.Chairman (Josiah Carrier) - Chair

Salterton Drama Club

Budleigh SaltertonThere is a long tradition of successful amateur dramatics at Budleigh Salterton. Since the group was founded in 1938, it has gone from strength to strength, finally acquiring its own theatre - the Salterton Playhouse - in 1970. The Playhouse is a large wooden building set next to the stream in Meadow Lane, and offers raked seating and full facilities for approximately 80 patrons.
Although the Club is relatively small, levels of enthusiasm and commitment are very high indeed. As a result, we are currently able to stage four plays a year, with each production running for six consecutive nights.
We are always glad to welcome individuals who are interested in acting and directing, such involvement is not a requirement of membership, and there are plenty of opportunities for non-acting members to become involved in a variety of backstage and front of house activities.
The club also has a busy Social Programme, which does much to maintain the integrity of the group during the periods between productions. This involves events such as social play readings, theatre visits to both local amateur and professional productions, barbecues, treasure hunts, skittle evenings and so on. The Salterton Drama Club is nothing if not social, and new members can be assured of a warm welcome.

Sidmouth Amateur Dramatic Society Ltd

SidmouthHeather Hodge (Company Secretary SADS.Ltd), 43 Temple Street, Sidmouth, EX10 9BA Tel: 01395 577816
The Society was founded in 1922 and until 1956 (with a gap during the war years) produced one play a year at the Manor Pavilion Theatre in Sidmouth. From 1957 - 1964, two plays a year were presented and after a few years these were increased to three which continues to this day. The famous 1920's music hall/variety entertainer Gene Gerrard and author Ron Delderfield, were both prominent members of the Society.
Our annual pantomimes were started in 1978 with great success and in 1979, due to a gap in the theatre\’s programme during peak summer visitor\’s season, four local societies were asked to fill a gap in the theatre\’s programme. This was due to the professional company \‘The Mercury Players\’ deciding to delay their return to Sidmouth and the Council wished the theatre to be used during the summer months for entertainment for the visitors so for five years, SADS presented four plays and a pantomime.
Due to the financial success of our pantomimes, it enabled us in 1986 to re-build our headquarters/workshop. This is situated within ‘The Byes’ Sidmouth, on land owned by the National Trust and although we built the hall and maintain it, the building remains the property of the National Trust to whom we pay an annual rent to use the facilities. The building proudly boasts a rehearsal room, a large scenery dock for construction, painting and storage. We have a small kitchen, toilet facilities, and a store devoted for all our props. The upstairs section of the hall is home to our extensive wardrobe department. We hold a tremendous amount of lighting & sound equipment which is stored at the Manor Pavilion but is available for hire at a competitive rate.
We have a thriving junior and youth group which meets on a Wednesday and they staged their own show at the Manor Pavilion in April 2010.
Over the last two years, we have had entries in the Exmouth one-act play festival. The first year was an adult entry plus a separate junior entry. This year saw just an adult entry, written by two of our members and which won the award for \‘Best Original Script\’. Two actors were also nominated for best character actor & actress.
We present an active social programme as well which includes such things as Barbecues, Quiz nights, Film night with Fish & Chip supper, skittles and play reading evenings.

Squire Theatre

South Westemail
Squire Theatre is a new Devon based company offering industry standard stage combat training to schools and theatre groups such as yourself. We offer a range of services including armed and unarmed combat, theatrical effect such as blood and squibs and historical consultancy for plays and film productions. Squire offers practical experience from industry professionals developing unique skills that can be utilised within your training program or productions. We aim to provide affordable workshops dedicated to introducing students and amateur performers to the fundamental workings of dramatic combat so as to encourage safe and professional working practices and all levels of theatre.
Stage combat builds confidence, self control, trust and physical fitness all essential qualities for any actor. Be it a youth production or a rep company, a high quality combat scene is a true joy to watch. After all conflict is the essence of drama and the epitome of conflict is combat. Stage combat is so much more than a way of providing filler for the ever dreaded stage direction 'they fight.' It is an all encompassing performance skill combining the physical fitness and control of dance with the close character study of acting and the practical know how of riggers and stage managers. Be it creating a convincing Shakespearian duel or a truly slick slapstick routine stage combat has something for everyone.
As well as gaining a highly sought after performance skills actors and students will also have the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals gaining valuable insight into the reality of the performance industry. As company manager I personally take responsibility for all combat based workshops using my knowledge and experience as a working actor combatant and stunt performer to introduce more people to a side of drama that is seldom explored in traditional training and yet one of the most exciting. I know a lot of us (particularly the lads) only got into performing in the first place after having watched any number of Jackie Chan, Van Dam, Batman combinations and always relish the chance to be an Errol Flynn like action hero.
Unlike a martial art or sporting activity stage combat is an art form which is founded on cooperation and support rather than competition. It is primarily non contact although with confidence groups can explore cooperative contact techniques such as lifts and throws and is by its very nature highly safety conscious (the first rule of fight club is...no one gets hurt!).
Workshops are very flexible and can be booked according to your needs. Squire also runs an artist in residence scheme which can be tailored to your individual needs combining long or short term tuition in fights, falls, and effects. All our staff are fully CRB checked and all props used adhere to British safety standards.
All students must be 10 years old or over. Our instructors are all high grade drama graduates and are certified by the British Academy of Dramatic Combat. For the sake of quality we also insist that all our instructors have received a level 3 distinction grade from the BADC (British Academy of Dramatic Combat) and nothing lower. For more information on our work with schools and to book Squire Theatre please visit our website and click on the secondary section. Or if you would like more information as to my personal work within the stunt industry please visit my personal site. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Tiverton Dramatic SocietyTivertonDrama & Comedy - Age Range: 16 to 90 - Rehearsals: Mondays & Thursdays
We are a friendly society comprising more than thirty fun-loving members, all with an interest in theatre, be it on stage or in a valuable backstage role.
We present two main productions per year, one in the spring and one in the autumn, showing to the public usually for four nights. These major productions are usually performed at the New Hall in Tiverton. In between these major productions we also produce one-act plays and murder mysteries which often tour to different venues.
We will always welcome new members, young or old, who wish to participate in our productions, either on or off stage. We meet on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7.30 pm at the Pannier Market in Tiverton.

Torquay Operatic Society (TOPS Musical Productions)

TorquayTorquay Operatic Society was founded in 1897 as a winter hobby for the 'Rowing Set.' Thirteen men attended the first meeting which launched the society. The founding fathers wanted to give the people of Torquay a chance to enjoy musical productions which might have otherwise been denied them. At the same time it was agreed that the society's aim should be to raise funds for charity.
2005 saw a change of name for the society. Many members felt that Torquay Operatic Society no longer reflected the type of music they sing and the shows they now present. T.OP.S. Musical Productions is the new promotional name for the society that will take it through the 21st Century.
