Newquay Amateur Operatic Society

Rehearsals: Tuesday & Thursday
Newquay Amateur Operatic Society is a long running organisation which presents one major show every Easter to the public at Newquay Tretherras Theatre in Newquay, Cornwall as well as taking part in and presenting other events. We are very proud of what we have achieved and the great history the society carries. We are open to and strongly welcome new members to the society both on stage or working behind the scenes. We have so much fun putting shows and events together and know that anyone else taking part would too!

Newquay Dramatic Society

Age Range: over 16
Newquay Amateur Dramatic Society was founded in May 1931 and we have been presenting plays continually since that date. In 1980 the Society acquired the Lane Village Hall and then began the process of transforming an almost derelict building into the excellent 138 seat facility we enjoy today. In 1999 we secured a substantial Arts Council (National Lottery) grant which enabled us to carry out major improvements for the comfort of both our audiences and actors. The building is now fully equipped to meet the needs of our friends with disabilities with dedicated toilet facilities, ramped access and hearing loops. The refurbished building was opened by Phillip Schofield on 3rd September 2000. Eric Chappell writer of such classics as Rising Damp, Duty Free & Only When I Laugh was holidaying in Cornwall when he learned that we were performing one of his plays. He came to see it unannounced and was so delighted with the standard of the production that he has since asked that we stage two world premiers of new plays which have subsequently been published by Samuel French Ltd.

Veryan Players

Veryan, Truro

Rehearsals: Monday and Thursday
Two to three productions are staged a year, ranging from high brow to farce, mystery to comedy (although not pantomime which we leave to our friends in Tregony and St Mawes). This allows a rehearsal period of about 12 weeks for each production. Rehearsals are twice a week, mostly Mondays and Thursdays, but not every cast member is always called to every rehearsal. Other roles such as backstage, publicity and front of house involve being available nearer to the time of performance and immediately afterwards.
Performances are usually 3 nights, a Thursday, Friday and Saturday with the Spring and Autumn productions taking place in our Veryan base and the Summer production is usually staged in Portscatho, where a wider holiday audience can be reached, over a two week period, performing two nights a week.
People have different reasons for belonging to an amateur dramatic society- obviously we need people to act on the stage (we could do with some more acting members between the ages of say, 18 - 45!) but we also need people to do other things, such as reading through plays and letting us know of any they would like to see us perform. We need more people to help put up the stage in Veryan Parish Hall before each production (and to dismantle it afterwards), to help front of house or backstage during productions, set building, or to simply help with the refreshments during the play intervals. Many hands make light work- although work is hardly the word to use when one is having such a good time. Amateur dramatics is great fun so why not give it a go? If you have any questions regarding the society or you want to give any feedback on past productions, in the first instance please contact email:
