*Are you interested in Acting?
*Do you want to learn the tricks of the trade?
*Do you want to meet local professionals who can help you achieve your goals?
This group is open to all - whether you have acted before or not. It is for people who would like to practice acting techniques for film and theatre. As a writer and director I will be developing scripts which we can use to practice; with the goal of producing independant films and theatre productions based in Birmingham. The plan of the group is to have regular workshops, practice acting technigues, run through scripts and much more. The group will also have events were you can socialize with people who share similar interests. This is a great place to promote Birmingham talent.

The Crescent Theatre & Youth Theatre

Facebook
  Twitter

Sheepcote Street, Birmingham B16 8AE

Many people join the Crescent to "tread the boards". If you want to be considered for a part, you should attend one of the auditions for the production. These usually take place around ten to twelve weeks before the opening night. There are usually two or three auditions for a production, sometimes more, but if you cannot attend on any of the dates, you should contact the director and see if it is possible to arrange to see him or her on another occasion.
If you are fortunate enough to get a part, you will normally find yourself committing up three evenings a week to attending rehearsals up to the technical rehearsal and probably almost every night from then until the production closes. You also need to allow a realistic amount of time to learn lines. A director will normally ask for "books down" after about three or four weeks from the first rehearsal and, if you are not reasonably confident with your lines by then, you will find rehearsals heavy going and relatively unproductive.
If you don’t feel ready to go for a Main House production, consider auditioning for one of the half dozen or so Studio Productions that take place during the year. These are usually on a much smaller scale than Main House shows and generally run for only a shorter period of time
The Crescent Youth Theatre works with young people aged 11 - 19. We run weekly workshops on Saturday’s during term time, and 2 weeks of drama summer school in August.
Anyone aged 11-19 is welcome to apply for Membership of the Youth Theatre.
Each group has a major production; CYTS perform for 4 evenings and a matinee in March and CYTJ perform for a matinee and 2 evenings in June. There are also other performance opportunities throughout the year.
Rehearsals for the major productions take place during usual workshop hours, and technical, dress rehearsals and a few extra Sunday rehearsals are held outside of workshop hours.
For more details and pictures from the Crescent Youth Theatre’s past performances please refer to our website
Joining the youth theatre will give you an opportunity to work in a fully operational, functioning and busy theatre. You will have the opportunity to act, direct and learn all the elements of crew and back stage work. As a member of CYT you will get discounted ticket to all the Crescent Theatre’s ‘in-house’ productions and will also have the opportunity to audition to perform for the Crescent Theatre’s own productions or work back stage on these projects.

The Shakespeare Institute Players

Birmingham

The Shakespeare Institute Players is the dramatic society of the post-graduate students of The Shakespeare Institute (part of the University of Birmingham). Registered students are automatically members and the membership can vote to allow alumni or other outside people to join the Players (but they have no voting rights and cannot hold office). There are elections for new officers (President, Secretary, and Treasurer) in the Autumn Term and the group produces approximately 3 plays a year: one in each term. Although the most popular playwright is Shakespeare, productions of non-Shakespearian plays have been produced, as have the works of modern playwrights. It is up to the membership to vote on production proposals each term to see which play is performed.
The Players have been around under many different names since The Shakespeare Institute has existed. The first recorded production was: A Yorkshire Tragedy (Unknown Author) performed as The Shakespeare Institute Dramatic Society. It was performed in February 1953.
Since then, the group has had many different names, but the most commonly used name (and the one by which it is currently known) is The Shakespeare Institute Players.

Theatre Ark

Birmingham

Theatre Ark produces live theatre performances of an excellent standard, and meets at fortnightly sessions in the city centre. They are led and mentored by theatre professionals and are an offshoot company of Big Brum Theatre Company. Their last project was a site-specific video installation at A E Harris, 'The Name of Action', which explored the lives of young people in Birmingham using Shakespeare text.
The members, all aged 14-20 years, are responsible for the productions and they are also training to take on full responsibility for the running of the whole organisation - the finance, planning, policy-making, fund-raising, programming, marketing - everything! Each member is fiercely committed to making this a professional theatre company of the future.
'Watch out for Theatre Ark because this is an example of Birmingham’s future which we should all try to support. If ever there’s a group to watch it’s these youngsters. ' Steve McCabe, MP
